Abstract

The use of force in law-enforcement operations within overlappingmaritime zones is a contested question in international law. This article examines themost recent rules and case law governing the use of force at sea in general, andanalyses the rights and obligations of States in overlapping maritime areas. From this, itdelineates the limits applicable to the use of force in maritime law-enforcement withinoverlapping zones.Keywords: Use of force; United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea(UNCLOS); overlapping maritime zones.
